That amazing attention to detail, no matter the graphical fidelity, help to immerse the player in the fantastic world. The game pops with color, character reactions, combat slices or explosions, reflections in water and a ripple when you walk through puddles. One of the best things about Tales of Phantasia comes in its obvious style and respect for immersion-even with technical limitations. Games like BioShock or Okami can hold up today because they didn’t seek realism-but style. That being said, when games excel in stylization, they have the ability to be timeless because they never tried to be anything more. What once looked ‘photo-real’ to us in 2010 looks like a pixelated mess now. You can pause the game anytime to use magic and items or decide on an overall strategy for the allies.There is an inherent drawback to that style however-it ages, very fast. The player directly controls one character, while AI controls the rest of the party. Tales of Phantasia is a Japanese-style role-playing game with a unique combat system: battles are action-oriented and take place on separate side-scrolling screens. Before Cless’ mother died in his arms, she told him that the terrible massacre had something to do with the pendant she and her husband had given Cless for his birthday… what could be the connection? Cless decides to visit his uncle in another town, but he has no idea his journey will take him much further afield. When they returned to the village, they discovered it had been burned down, and all its inhabitants had been murdered.
But as soon as it stopped speaking, the two friends heard an alarm go off. Cless was chasing a wild boar when he came across a strange talking tree in the forest pleading for help. Cless decided to go hunting with his best friend Chester on another ordinary day.
